The construction of Baconsthorpe Castle, really a formidable manor house, was started in 1480 by John Heydon. A license to crenellate the house was issued in 1561 and the outer gatehouse dates from this period.
There is evidence of the use of hand guns with key shaped gunports found in the round towers on the west side of the house, and deeply splayed gunports within the northern curtain wall. To the east and south of the mansion are mere, pond and remains of a formal garden, dating from the sixteenth century. |
