Cardiff Castle - Cardiff, Wales (Cardiff City Council)

Right in the busy centre of  Cardiff, Wales capital city, are the remains of this castle. The high perimeter wall was rebuilt directly onto the remains of the Roman fort which originally occupied this site and you can see the change in brickwork from the outside, as well as the more extensive remains inside and under ground level.

In 1090, a new castle was begun under the Norman invaders. Today, what remains besides the outer wall are in two main areas - the high motte, topped by a stone tower keep (with wonderful views of the city, including the nearby Millennium Stadium) and the large later buildings which have highly decorated interiors.

From 1865, the then owner, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, converted some of the medieval domestic buildings into a gothic fantasy land.
