Peckforton Castle - Taporley, Cheshire (EH) Built between 1844 and 1851 as a functional Victorian home with the style of a 12th Century castle by John Tollemach, member of Parliament for Cheshire 1841-1872, from the designs of Anthony Salvin.
On our visit, a sunny August Saturday afternoon in 1998, focus was on a wedding function for later that evening and therefore, most of the 'animatronic tour' was cordoned off. This Victorian 12th Century castle has seen better days with very few internal decorations remaining from its heyday. It was purchased from the receivers in 1989 by a mother and son partnership for a million pounds to be turned into a hotel. It was opened for the first time to the public in 1990 but the hotel neve materialised.
Above is the view of Pekforton across the valley from the medieval Beeston Castle no more than a few miles away. |
