Banks East Turret - Brampton, Cumbria (EH) The remains of turret 52a at Banks East was originally constructed for the Turf Wall. Although Hadrian's Wall once continued on from here to Bowness-on-Solway, there is practically nothing left visible. This is, therefore, the last remaining visible structure on the west of the Britain.
The Vallum can be seen west of Banks East for more than a mile. Although an unusually large fragment of the superstructure lies beside the turret, it does not provide any conclusive evidence for the turret's original height or appearance. A footpath leads east up to the Pike Hill signal tower. |
