Marmion Tower - West Tanfield, North Yorkshire (EH)

The remains of a medieval fourteenth century gatehouse with a fine orial window of delicate gothic tracery. The house which the gatehouse guarded is long gone, but this remains a romantic ruin, possibly inspiring the writer Sir Walter Scott for his novel Marmion. The dark river Ure flows past the bottom of the tower to the left and is easily reached.
