Norwich Tower - Norwich, Norfolk (Pvt)

The remains of a fortified tower which was part of Norwich's Mediaeval city defences. Although the city walls would have had towers, this one is free-standing, and there is no evidence that it ever formed part of the main walls. It is sited overlooking a curving, wide expanse of river running through the city and thus a highly defensible point.

It could possibly have been used to keep watch on trade entering and leaving the docks and to protect the entrance of the city from water-born attacks. Inside there are numerous recesses, perhaps for storage of weaponry, or something more prosaic. Today it is situated in a riverside park.
