The cathedral was founded in 1096 by Bishop Herbert de Losinga, as part of a Benedictine monastery. It's construction took around 50 years to complete using Caen Stone brought to the site via a canal which is now Ferry Lane.
The building's ground plan is a traditional cross shape. Above are the tower and spire, the second highest in England.
Some of the oldest stained glass in the cathedral date from the 14th and 15th centuries, it is, however, the later 19th century windows by the artist Burn Jones which grabbed our attention. |
